Every directory claims to list “trusted” businesses. Here’s what that word actually means on Illawarra Services — and just as importantly, what it doesn’t.
What the blue “✓ Verified” badge means
A verified listing is a business we’ve confirmed is a real, locally-operating Illawarra business. Before a listing earns the badge we check, against public records, that the business name, phone number and service area are genuine and current, and that the business actually operates in the Wollongong, Shellharbour or Kiama LGAs. National chains, interstate call centres and Sydney businesses with a local-sounding name don’t make the cut — being genuinely local is the whole point of this directory.
What it doesn’t mean
Honesty matters more than marketing here:
- Verification is not an endorsement. We confirm a business is real and local — we can’t guarantee the quality of any individual job.
- We don’t check licences or insurance. For licensed trades (plumbing, electrical, building work and others), always check the licence yourself on the free NSW Fair Trading register before hiring — it takes two minutes.
- The badge can’t be bought. Verification is earned by being a genuine local business, never purchased. If we ever offer paid placement, it will be clearly labelled as such and will never include the verified badge or influence reviews.
Amber “Claim this listing” businesses
Listings with the amber tag were compiled from publicly available sources — they’re real local businesses as far as public records show, but the owner hasn’t yet confirmed the details. Business owners can claim their listing free to confirm their information, add photos and a description, and work toward verification. If a business asks to be removed, we remove it.
Reviews
Reviews on Illawarra Services are written by genuine customers. We don’t write them, we don’t pay for them, we don’t let businesses pay to remove them, and payment of any kind never affects what’s published. Reviews are moderated only to filter spam, abuse and conflicts of interest, and businesses can respond to feedback on their listing.
Something look wrong?
If a listing is out of date, miscategorised, or you believe a business shouldn’t be listed, email hello@illawarraservices.com.au and we’ll look into it — that feedback is how a curated directory stays curated.
